Ok….so….Jamie and I have had the opportunity to met some very extraordinary people during our time as photographers.  We have traveled from Italy to South Carolina to photograph people on their wedding day and have seen a lot of different traditions on those special days.  Some time last year we had the great fortune to met Lenka Hejlkova and James Garlik who just happen to be getting married this weekend in Chapel Hill, NC.  Lenka is a new type bride for us in that she is originally from the Czech Republic in central Europe.  We had a pre-wedding dinner consult with Lenka and James and discovered that their wedding would be a mixture of both American and Czech customs/traditions.  Lenka’s entire family still lives in Central Europe and we just found out that most of them arrived in NC this week.

Her family arriving brings us to our blog post today…in that this is where a Czech wedding traditions come into play.  It goes like this…Some time before the actual wedding day the groom is taken away on a trip (which has to be out of town) with his friends and in this case James and his crew spent the day touring the Yadkin Winery’s while enjoying each others company and wine tasting.  While at the same time the ladies spent the entire day making  around 2000 wedding pastries called “Kolacky” (spelled several different ways).  This custom is unique in that its purpose is to bring the ladies together for a day of socializing, laughing and sharing time with each other before the bride is married away into another household.  Tradition says that the bride is not allowed to help in the making of Kolacky and in fact if she does she will have both a bad marriage and whinny kids.  This means that the task has to fall to her mom, her aunts, cousins and closest friends.  The process of making Kolacky is very involved and each lady has her role to play, or has their job to preform.  Its a virtual assembly line churning out thousands of these tasty little treats.  The making of Kolacky and the endearing friendships that we formed while there is what this blog post is really all about…

Every lady has a specific job which I believe is based a little on seniority :)   Lenka’s mom and Aunts had the very difficult task of wrapping them before they go into the oven.

I wanted to create a sense of movement as that is exactly what they were doing, no idle hands here!!

love this view as it clearly shows the stations that each lady was holding

very very cool in that the ingredients and the liquor were all brought from the Czech Republic!!!!! doesn’t get any more authentic than that.

half way finished so a toast was in order before lunch

the lunch was amazing, loved the variety and selection, we were so honored as they treated us just like family

Jamie was trying to fold the dough before it gets to the table for processing…you can see why its left to the experts to get done!!

again, wanted to use a sense of motion to better show how fast she was moving and really its way way more difficult than it looks like.

a single raisin has to be placed into each and every Kolacky…

after the oven they are all emersed in powdered sugar and then placed in boxes ready for the big day.

caitlyn and justin … married… at THE sweetest little chapel in elon!  <3 them both!!

caitlyn and justin are one of our “first look couples”!!  there was no doubt that it was Perfect for them and made their day flow so much easier!  they wanted to leave the ceremony and go straight to the reception and doing the first look made that completely possible!  plus, i don’t think they could have gone much longer without seeing each other that day!  :)

one of the reasons i Love first looks so much... you just can't be intimate with your fiance at the alter. you can't giggle and laugh and hug and kiss and be intimate together in the front of the church in front of all your guests... but at a first look, Game On! :)

during their ceremony, caitlyn and justin lit candles their guests were given on the way in to symbolize all of them coming together as part of the unity candle ceremony. i thought it was a Super cool idea!!

and because we did ALL their family pics Before the ceremony, they literally walked out of the church and to the reception! awesomeness!!

i’m sure the party kept getting better and better after we had to leave!  it was a great wedding and we were so glad we could be there!!   xxoo, jamie and richie
